The Dental Crown Process

Getting a custom dental crown generally involves two visits to our Jonesboro office. The first visit will include Dr. Wagner or Dr. Langston numbing the tooth and surrounding area with a local anesthetic. After the area is numb, your dentist will file or shave the tooth down to allow room for the crown. Once the tooth is prepped, they will take impressions of your tooth and send them to a lab to be custom-made for you.

A temporary crown will be placed to protect the tooth while your permanent crown is being designed and created. Your second visit will involve your dentist checking and adjusting the new crown to your bite. When it is the perfect size, shape, length, and color, it will be permanently cemented into place.

Dental Crowns FAQ

Why would I need a dental crown?

There are many reasons why a patient might want or need a dental crown, including:

  • To protect a weak tooth from breaking
  • To support a severely worn down tooth
  • To restore a broken tooth
  • To support a tooth with a filling
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To disguise severely discolored teeth
  • To make a cosmetic modification
  • To cover misshapen teeth

Should I get a dental crown or a dental bridge?

Dental crowns are typically used to cover a single damaged or discolored tooth. Dental bridges can cover three or more teeth that need to be restored, and they can also be used to replace missing teeth. A consultation with our dentist will determine the best option for you as our dentists consider factors like the condition of your teeth, your oral health, and overall smile goals.

How long does a dental crown last?

The longevity of a dental crown varies depending on several factors, including the material used, oral hygiene practices, and oral habits. Our custom-fitted dental crowns usually last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Our dental crowns are crafted with high-quality materials, which allows them to handle wear and tear. If, for any reason, your dental crown needs to be replaced or adjusted, we encourage you to reach out to our office.

How do I take care of a dental crown?

Dental crowns are durable and long-lasting. However, they require the same amount of care as your natural teeth. It is essential to brush and floss around your dental crown as the tooth under could potentially become impacted by food and bacteria. Regular dental check ups are also an important part of caring for a dental crown. Before you leave our office with your new dental crown, one of our dentists will provide you with all the information you need to care for your crown confidently!
