What Foods Promote a Healthy Smile?

February 28, 2023 8:00 am

Not only can a diet high in starchy, sugar-filled foods cause you to feel sluggish, it can make you more susceptible to dental disease and oral health issues. In contrast, foods that are rich in nutrients, such as calcium, can fuel your body and your smile! It’s never too late to make beneficial dietary changes that can boost your oral health and overall health. So if you’re wanting to make some adjustments to your diet, here are some healthy foods that can help promote strong teeth and gums.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, collard greens, kale, and cabbage contain healthful iron, folic acid, calcium, and vitamins A, C, and K, as well as antioxidants. If you don’t like salads very much, try putting frozen spinach in your smoothies, a cabbage mix in your tacos, and/or kale in a soup.

Crunchy Vegetables

If you crave something crunchy, opt for a fresh vegetable instead of chips to help keep you energized. There are many veggies that are great for snacking, such as celery, carrots, broccoli, bell peppers, jicama, and sugar snap peas.

Fruit

Eating fruit is a simple way to satisfy your sweet tooth while still keeping your smile strong. While fruit contains natural sugars, its nutrients and fiber are beneficial to your body. Strawberries, bananas, blueberries, apples, pears, kiwis, oranges, blackberries, and grapes are excellent snack options!

Water

Staying hydrated with water is an essential step to maintaining a healthy smile and body. When you’re properly hydrated, your mouth can produce enough saliva to keep your mouth moist, rinse away bacteria and food particles, neutralize acids, and remineralize your teeth. Plus, water is critical for the proper functioning of all your organs and body systems.
