Three Ways to Keep Your Smile Bright
August 15, 2023 8:17 pmWhen a person likes their smile, they’re more confident and comfortable in their own skin! Unfortunately, even professional tooth whitening doesn’t last forever, so how do you keep your smile bright and white? Here are three good ways:
1. Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
Brushing and flossing daily prevents cavities and removes stain-causing substances! The main culprit is plaque, which dulls and discolors your teeth. If plaque isn’t cleaned from your teeth, it calcifies into tartar, which is a hard deposit only a dentist can safely remove. Tartar is very porous, so it absorbs pigments from what you eat and drink. A yellow or even brown coating can form along your gums and on your tooth surface. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day removes plaque before it turns into tartar!
2. Limit Drinks That Stain Your Tooth Enamel
Everything you eat, and drink can stain your smile, but some beverages are worse than others. Coffee, tea, and red wine all contain tannins, which easily discolor teeth. You don’t need to cut out these drinks completely (tannins contain healthy antioxidants) but limiting them and drinking them through a straw can reduce their staining power. If you drink a lot of soft drinks, you should know they stain, too, thanks to their sugar and acid content.
3. Stay Up to Date on Cleanings & Exams
When you visit us for a routine appointment, we remove surface stains and polish your teeth. We also remove built-up tartar, which you can’t remove at home with regular brushing and flossing. Staying up to date on cleanings and exams keeps your teeth healthier, whiter, and brighter.
