How To Save a Cracked Tooth
July 11, 2022 1:19 pmWhile your teeth are designed to withstand the impacts involved in chewing and eating, they’re not invincible. Sometimes, accidents happen and you may crack a tooth. If this happens to you, here’s how to save a cracked tooth!
Step One: Call Our Office
In most cases, our team can accommodate a same day appointment for dental emergencies. If you crack a tooth, call our office immediately to see when you can come in to see Dr. Wagner or Dr. Langston.
Step Two: Gently Rinse Your Mouth
Cracked teeth are vulnerable to infection. To clean your mouth and keep infection at bay, gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. This rinses and soothes the area until you’re able to see us for treatment.
Step Three: Professional Treatment to Save a Cracked Tooth
Bonding
Dental Crown
Root Canal Treatment
There are several ways to treat a cracked tooth, and the best option depends on the extent of the damage. For just a minor crack, we may use dental bonding to fill in and seal the crack. Not only does this prevent infection from getting into the delicate interior of your tooth, it fortifies your natural tooth for future use.
When a cracked tooth is more damaged, we may opt to use a dental crown to treat the crack and preserve your natural tooth. After cleaning the crack, we’ll place a dental crown over the damaged tooth to act as a protective shell. Once the crown is placed, you’ll be able to eat and talk normally. Best of all, dental crowns look just like natural teeth, so no one will be able to tell you’re using one!
For the most severe cracks, root canal therapy may be necessary. Our team will perform a root canal to remove any infected or damaged tissue from the tooth, then place a dental crown for protection.
