Common Dental Problems for Kids

Here are some of the most common dental problems that children experience:

Cavities

Tooth decay commonly affects children who eat a lot of sugary snacks, drink juice and soda, and have poor oral hygiene. Harmful bacteria in the mouth feast upon their dietary sugary and produce acidic byproducts that erode their enamel. If plaque is not regularly brushed and flossed away and weakened enamel is not quickly remineralized, your child’s teeth will develop holes called cavities. Help your child establish good oral health habits when they young, including consuming a balanced diet, brushing and flossing every day, and routinely visiting the dentist.

Misalignment

After their baby teeth emerge then fall out, your child’s permanent teeth will start popping up. It’s possible that these teeth won’t come in exactly where they should or they may drift and shift as your child gets older. Plus, their teeth development can be affected by the size of their jaw and palate, and habits like prolonged thumbsucking and tongue thrusting, which can contribute to crowding, gaps, and a misaligned bite. Schedule an orthodontic consultation for your child around age 7 to determine when they should get orthodontic treatment! Some children benefit from early interceptive treatment, while other children can wait several years before beginning treatment.

Dental Emergencies

Childhood accidents can happen on the playground, during sports, and when roughhousing with siblings. Contact us ASAP if your child experiences a chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth! We can also provide your child with a protective mouthguard if they play a contact sport.
